SEATO
This was the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization. It sought to sanction the U.S. presence in Vietnam. It was also created to stifle communism in Southeast Asia. The original members of SEATO were Australia, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and the United States.
Although both NATO and SEATO were designed to protect their member countries and to form alliances between nations, SEATO did not create its own military structure, nor did it require its members to respond if one was attacked. In the event of aggression or subversion in the treaty area, the members were to consult and to meet the common danger in accordance with their own constitutional processes. Basically, SEATO was created so that member countries could be actively involved in a no-strings-attached alliance with other countries. Member countries could choose to discuss things diplomatically with other members and come up with a solution that could benefit all parties involved. Members were not forced to participate, but were allowed protection from participating members who wished to defend certain nations if any agression should arise between enemy countries. Although SEATO had good intentions, it was eventually dissolved on June 30th, 1977.
