NATO
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The purpose of NATO was originally to maintain peace and stability in North American and European countries from attack, mainly from the USSR. The original members of NATO were United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Belgium, Canada, France, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. NATO's goal was to create a peaceful environment for its members in that they could feel secure if ever there was an attack on their nation. NATO promotes democratic values and is committed to peaceful means of resolving conflict if at all possible. If such diplomatic efforts are not attainable, NATO has developed the military capacity needed to undertake crisis management, and operates incooperation with other countries and internal organizations.
