Leonid Brezhnev
Leonid Brezhnev was Khrushchev’s successor. He held power from the mid 1960’s until he died in 1982. He ruled Russia as a harsh totalitarian dictator. He rigorously suppressed dissidents, or those who spoke out against the government. Such people faced arrest and imprisonment, and many were even locked away in insane asylums. He, like Khrushchev, was a communist and believed that communism was the only way to success. He wanted to create a disciplined, strictly-ruled, totalitarian state in which he called all of the shots and would not tolerate any disobedience or mutany of any kind. This meant that a citizen must abide by the rules or else face severe punishment. You can imagine why not many people were happy with Brezhnev as a leader.
