Cuban Missile Crisis
This was the closest the world ever came to a full-scale nuclear war. The U.S was more adequately prepared than the Soviets, thus the Soviet field commanders in Cuba were ready to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it became necessary. The Soviets began to assemble missiles in Cuba, as discovered in reconnaissance photos. President Kennedy announced the installation of the missiles to the public of Cuba on October 22nd, 1962. This was one of the darkest times in our history, because the public was in extreme tension, not knowing when these nuclear missiles might strike. This crisis was resolved when the U.S accepted the terms expressed in a letter from Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Khrushchev announced that he would dismantle the installations and return the missiles to the Soviet Union, so long as the United States would not invade Cuba. The U.S agreed to these terms, and brutal warfare was overall avoided.
